Richard HaassThe president of the Council on Foreign Relations Richard Haass said on MSNBC’s Morning Joe that the United States’ credibility on the world stage took a “major hit” when President Barack Obama drew a red line in Syria and refused to enforce it.
Haas began by discussing the negotiations between Obama and Russian President Vladimir Putin on how best to resolve the conflict in Syria. “Do we have baggage going into that kind of alliance, because of the line that we drew and didn’t enforce?” asked guest host Nicolle Wallace.
“One hundred percent,” Haass said. “The United States’ credibility has taken a major hit. Probably the most consequential thing the president didn’t do in his presidency was follow up on his pledges in Syria to attack the regime after they used chemicals.”
“That had consequences not just in Syria, not just in the Middle East, but throughout the world,” he said. “This is in a sense the biggest problem arguably with his foreign policy legacy, what he hasn’t done in this part of the world.”
