DAVID CAMERON CALLS THE CHURCH TO ACTION

DAVID CAMERON CALLS THE CHURCH TO ACTION by John Hibbert

Posted on December 17, 2011

Whatever our personal opinions, political or otherwise, regarding our current Prime Minister, at least we have a politician who has finally had the spine to make a pro-Christian statement.  David Cameron has declared that “Britain is a Christian country and we should not be afraid to say so”

Ironically he was speaking to the Church of England clergy gathered in Oxford, exhorting them that a return to Christian values could counter the country’s “moral collapse.”

Mr.Cameron said there were three reasons why the King James Bible was as relevant today as any point in its history.

“The King James Bible has bequeathed a body of language that permeates every aspect of our culture and heritage. Second, just as our language and culture is steeped in the Bible, so too is our politics.  What I am saying is that the Bible has helped to give Britain a set of values and morals which make Britain what it is today.”  He said, “Moral neutrality or passive tolerance just isn’t going to cut it anymore.”  He said that people were unwilling to distinguish right from wrong.

He spoke honestly about his own fragile faith.  He told his audience he was a “committed but vaguely practicing Church of England Christian” who, while he would stand up for the values and principles of his faith, was “full of doubts and, like many, constantly grappling with the difficult questions when it comes to some of the big theological issues”.  His doubts are revealed in some of the liberal and non-biblical policies that he subscribes to, but surely we can regard his words as a step in the right direction.

It is sad that the archbishop of Canterbury and his Anglican clergy needed to be encouraged to take a Christian stand, but I hope they listened.  We need Christian ministers to have the courage to stand for truth and take a moral need in our nation.

Last month the government announced it was, sending a copy of the King James Bible, complete with a foreword from education minister Michael Gove, to every school in the country.
